Lycian Events are proud to announce the launch of Lycian Events Motorsport, an exciting new arm of the business that marks a bold step further into the world of competitive racing.

As part of this expansion, Lycian Events Motorsport will be sponsoring driver David Williams in the SRCC Sports 2000 Championship, competing in the highly competitive Duratec class. This move cements Lycian’s growing passion for motorsport - building on the success and atmosphere of Village on the Curves at Le Mans, and now bringing that same energy, ambition, and commitment directly onto the track.

THE SERIES

The SRCC Sports 2000 Championship is a cornerstone of UK club motorsport, renowned for delivering close, competitive racing in a friendly yet fiercely passionate environment. Centred around lightweight sports prototype cars powered by reliable Ford Duratec engines, the series strikes a perfect balance between performance, affordability, and technical simplicity. Its grid features a mix of experienced racers and enthusiastic newcomers, all drawn by the championship’s emphasis on driver skill and clean competition. With iconic circuits, tightly contested battles, and a strong sense of camaraderie in the paddock, the SRCC Sports 2000 Championship continues to thrive as one of the most engaging and accessible forms of circuit racing in Britain.

THE DRIVER

David Williams’ journey in motorsport is built on passion, persistence, and decades of hands-on experience both on and off the track. After spending two years immersed in UK race paddocks, he made his racing debut in 1988 in Formula Ford 1600, competing mainly at Brands Hatch and Castle Combe. A challenging start only strengthened his resolve, leading him to the Silverstone Racing School, where he ‘graduated’ in 1989 with a win in the end-of-course race.

Progressing through machinery including the Van Diemen RF87 and RF89, David’s career gained momentum with the purchase of a Van Diemen RF90, supported by extensive winter testing at Mallory Park and Donington Park. Success soon followed, with back-to-back Mallory FF1600 Championships in 1992 and 1993, alongside a runner-up finish in the Castle Combe series. He later secured multiple podium finishes in ARP Formula 3 between 1996 and 1998 in a Ralt RT32B.

Beyond competition, David has dedicated over 20 years as a race instructor, mentoring drivers on both two and four wheels, including roles at Castle Combe, with Team BRIT, and as a senior instructor at Le Mans. More recently, he has been a consistent front-runner in Historic Sports 2000 racing across the UK and Europe.

Now, he embarks on a new chapter in the Sports 2000 Duratec Championship, piloting a Van Diemen RF94 Gibson, an evocative car with its own history, originally rebuilt and raced by one of Nigel Mansell’s Formula 1 mechanics in the early 1990s.

THE CAR

The Van Diemen RF94 is a highly regarded example of 1990s race car engineering, combining lightweight construction with precise, responsive handling that rewards driver skill. Originally designed as a competitive single-seater platform, its adaptablechassis has since found a natural home in sports prototype racing, including the Sports 2000 Duratec category. Known for its balance and reliability, the RF94 offers excellent performance through fast corners and under braking, making it a favourite among experienced racers. Many of these cars carry rich histories, often maintained and developed over decades, adding char- acter and heritage to their on-track performance while continuing to deliver thrilling, competitive racing today.
